Most of us might only remember her for cutesy and really rather wordy 1985
smash, ‘Marlene On The Wall’ when Vega spearheaded what might loosely be called
the 80s ‘folk revival’. It was a time when the kids went crazy for the shocking
hedonism of Tanita Tikaram, the lyrical cut n thrust of Michelle Shocked and
old acid-head herself, Tracy Chapman. Even little Paul Simon had something of
a revival with his idiosyncratic brand of black-people music and folk’s fairy
godmother, Joni Mitchell almost broke a smile. But that was then and this is
now and Suzanne Vega has brought her maudlin collection of
kooky vignettes bang up to date with an album that takes all the best bits of
her career, strips them back, turns them on their head, yanks it up to eleven
and serves them up on one 12-track retrospective. It’s the kind of revisionism
seldom seen since Gary Glitter did a ‘glam-rock revamp’ of all his legendary
70s hits.
’Close-Up Vol 1, Love Songs’ is released on June 14th
through new home, Cooking Vinyl.
We can only surmise that ’Close-Up Vol 2, The Screaming Thrash Metal Collection’
will follow thereafter.
And you know what? Her mocking smile really does still say it all.
