Various Unknown Artists - We Were So Turned On: A Tribute To David Bowie

Old Romantics, Duran Duran head-up latest Bowie tribute album.

The phrase ‘musical luminaries’ is an oft-used, misunderstood and often widely misapplied expression in the hands of your average publicist, rarely indicating the arrival of anything so bright as ‘stars’ and invariably dispatched with a Jiffy Pack of uncomfortable silences and embarrassed looks. And this is really no different. This time the host of ‘musical luminaries’ prepares the way for a squarely ‘alternative’ take on David Bowie’s already sufficiently well rifled back-catalogue, with bands as popular as Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros and Megapuss leading the assault.

Duran Duran and lo-fi visual artist sort, Devendra Banhart also feature.

‘We Were So Turned On: A Tribute To David Bowie’ is set for release via LA independent Manimal on the 11th October. All proceeds from the two-disc, 34-track album will go towards the benefit of War Child.

The project was launched in 2008, and also includes contributions from Carla Bruni, A Place To Bury Strangers, Lights, Vivian Girls, Rainbow Arabia and many more.

You might challenge the VIP claims of the project’s press-handlers, but what it lacks in celebrity it more than makes up for in quality. Or one would hope.

Crud is just waiting for the day that someone pays tribute to the last independent Bowie tribute album, 'Diamond Gods – Interpretations Of Bowie'. Or even for someone to buy it.
