Girls can't play guitar. Many a misogynistic rock'n'roll
veteran will tell you that. But it doesn't stop NYC
trio Le Tigre combining dirty drum machine beats,
samples and scuzzy thrash guitar for full-on shouty
girl band effect.
Thankfully, for all their 'women rule' rhetoric, they're
not three butch lesbian politicians with instruments
peddling some long-forgotten Riot Grrl code of conduct.
Their music is a cross between the Supremes and the
Chipmunks, or Daphne and Celeste plus one doing feminist
electronic punk - and surprisingly, it's great pop.
Deceptacon sounds like a dance anthem for the grebo-girl
generation, while on Hot Topic they trample all over
a 60s-era Dusty template, while chanting about all their
favourite gals.
In sassy patterned uniforms, spinning their arms and
twirling like kids let loose on a dancefloor after being
locked up all day, Le Tigre do more for girl power in
one jubilant set than the Spice Girls did in their entire
career.
Women in rock need Le Tigre - the perfect combination
of experimental pop, feminist idealism and pure, unadulterated
fun.
