So it’s been 10 years of Gaz Coombes and company.
I remember when they were only yay tall…..Whoever said
10 years was a long time? Well they were probably right,
but Supergrass obviously weren’t in attendance
when it was said. Tonight’s gig was more like an audience
with…. A mid set acoustic session, including brown leather
couch, did little to dampen the carnival atmosphere.
With a back catalogue boasting more brit pop hits than
you could shake a Union Jack at, a mammoth set that
bordered on an hour and 45 minutes was more than a fitting
tribute. It was like a 26 year old having a testimonial.
The performances are as energetic as ever and the band
are more veteran than vintage. ‘Alright’, ‘Pumpin On
Your Stereo’ and ‘Sun Hits The Sky’ still have the same
vim and verve, and as a live song ‘Richard III’ is possibly
their finest moment. ‘Late In The Day’ is the perfect
brown leather couched acoustic number. And that’s only
a few of their mini classics.
The fact that they were never quite fashionable enough
makes it a little like like the tortoise and the hare.
So they didn’t burn out and fade away along with brit
pop but 10 years on they’re probably still your 2nd
favourite band.
The album Supergrass is 10 - The Best of 1994-2004
is out on June 7.
