ThisGIRL are either very brave, or very stupid.
Here is a band of the ‘gig ‘til you die or get really
famous’ school of thought, who throw caution to the
wind and refuse to play anything but new songs despite
frenzied requests from a devoted crowd.
It characterises a five-piece who love nothing better
than to throw punters into a state of complete confusion.
With every swivel of his snake-like hips, Liam Creamer
(vocals) challenges you to question his rock credentials;
with every acid jazz interlude, the band defy their
emo-punk-funk reputation; with every yelping leap from
amp to amp Liam questions our belief he is human and
not ape.
Fans of ‘Short Strut to the Brassy Front’, the
quite brilliant 2002 debut from these Rotherham genre-botherers,
will be even more confused by new single Hallelujah
which appears to border on mainstream.
A closer listen reveals a thunderous, nay relentless,
vacuum-packed layer cake of a song which abandons the
leafy-lane driving diversity of ‘…Brassy Front’ and
opts for straightforward rock – perhaps the influence
of new album producer Chris Tsangarides (Black
Sabbath, Judas Priest).
Despite “never doing encores” they come back – tantalise
us with promises of playing crowd favourite ‘Radars’…But
then finish on yet another rollicking new song anyway.
Confused? You will be…
