Like me, you may not agree that the crucial weight
of Dub can be reduced to a tidy amount of tweaking on
your laptop – but Pole’s recent full length release
on Mute – the culmination of two EPs ("45/45",
"90/90") you have to agree that something else – just
as radical and fundamental is evolving. What though?
I dunno. It’s not Dub, it’s not Techno, it’s not Hip
Hop. So what does Stefan Betke, aka Pole think it is?
Let hear his words on the subject:
“I spend a lot of time reducing the structures of
my tracks to create, step by step, layer by layer, a
foundation with true validity.”
Okay, so we’re as confused now as we were before we
started. But what we do know is this: Stefan Betke,
aka Pole, has announced details of four UK live
dates, all feat Fat Jon, in October 2003. So why not
go find out for yourself?
To coincide with the dates, Pole will release a brand
new single on 29th September. 'Back Home (feat Fat
Jon)' exclusively online as a free download from
the Official Pole website POLE-MUSIC.COM.
The single appears as an instrumental on Pole's recently
released POLE album – an album that sets a noticeable
definite of direction for the Berlin based Pole Stefan.
Trading in scratchy and complex tracks for clipped and
minimalist hip-hop, Ohio rapper Fat Jon provides the
laid back raps on four tracks with a result that recalls
Massive Attack’s work with Tricky.
Betke, has been around for a few years now, specialising
in minimal dub and techno as well as remixing for the
likes of Depeche Mode, appearing on a Levi’s
advert and collaborating with Radiohead and Four
Tet.
As well as the online single, the recently launched
websit - POLE-MUSIC.COM
- will be hosting special appearances from Stefan in
the Chatroom on September 9th, 11th, 15th and 17th
(from 10pm until 12 midnight CET (Central European
Time).
The London Electrowerks date also features Aoki Takamasa
(Progressive Form), Cursor Minor (Lo/ Uncharted
audio), Kansas City Prophets (Control Tower),
Ho Fun (Noodles Foundation), Abstract Knights
(Crunch/ Colony), Fiat 600 (Erratica) and Point
B (Erratica) plus DJs.
