CO-ORDINATES - WHERE THE STARS AT AT/RAM

RAM

James Berry asks David Potts of RAM, 'Where's Your Head At?'...

31/03/2004

If you can judge the potency of eclecticism by the amount of influences you can’t immediately put your finger on vs. the amount you can, then Manchester’s Ram is certifiably eclectic, with a capital ECLEC and a gold star. Ram is actually David Potts and David Potts was one half of Monaco along with Peter Hook for a while back in the 90s. Ram is actually much better that that too. He’s like a dancing Badly Drawn Boy with a telescope, charting some groovy cosmos and everything he could see out of the window on the way there. The EP ‘For You Love’ was out at the beginning of February and dragged together influences from the likes of Beck, Air, The Stereo MCs and The Beatles and fashioned something fairly bloody fresh sounding. We dragged his eye away from the lens for long enough to let us know where his head’s at.

1. Where are you now and what can you see?
I’m in my office / spare room / drunken lodger’s bedroom. I see my computer, the side of Francoise Hardy’s face, three pictures of Tin Tin, books, singles, a shit hi-fi, and a Chinese girl pearing out of her window opposite.

2. What was the last thing you ate?
A cardboard BLT, crisps and a Marathon from Hilton services.

3. What was the last thing you hated?
That shit sandwich.

4. What’s the next piece of music you intend to buy? Why?
Jean Claude Vannier, because Andy Votel played some last week...Melody Nelson era.

5. What was the last film you saw? Opinions, details…
The Dreamers. Utter shite. That was an insult to Cinematique Francaise...very far from a tribute. Main actor was wooden. Dialogue was cringeworthy. Hated it.

6. What did you dream about last night?
I got back from London at 6.30am this morning and dreamt about the gig and driving the van. Although in the dreams, there’s always more naked women around than I remember being there. Strange.

7. What’s the most important thing you’ve ever done?
Followed my instincts. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. But fuck it...makes life interesting.

8. What one place in the world do you wish you’d never been?
Naples.*

9. Denim, leather or other?
Denim. Ever since a cow licked my nose I’ve been unable to eat beef or wear leather. It spoke to me!

10. Any plans for tomorrow?
Same old bollocks really. Snowboarding, handgliding, massage parlour, curry, drinking, smoking etc
