CO-ORDINATES - WHERE THE STARS AT AT/TURIN BRAKES

TURIN BRAKES

James Berry asks Gale Paridjanian, one half of the Turin Brakes, 'Where's Your Head At?'...

03/03/2004

The latest in a long series of ‘Late Night Tales’ (a kind of ‘All Back To Mine’ compilation of artiste-chosen sundown soundtracks, from the likes of Zero 7, Groove Armada, Nightmares on Wax, Howie B and Rae & Christian thus far), Turin Brakes have thrown in their two pennies worth and assembled a collection of highbrow dinner-table blues. What else would you expect from the lead purveyors of the smart-casual acoustic movement? Ranging from the traditional smoky bar blues of John Hammond to the welcome sombre strumming of the Silver Jews and Smog, it’s largely a well judged mood anthology. The lounge funk is perhaps a step too far, but to counter that you do get Brian Blessed (officially in possession of the Second Best Pair Of Tonsils In The World Today – would you challenge Sir Ian McKellen?) delivering a spoken word piece. And there’s an acceptable cover of the Rolling Stones’ ‘Moonlight Mile’ from Turin Brakes themselves. We sent one half of them, Gale, a few questions to further pin down where he’s at.

1. What are you doing right now?
Running and screaming…

2. What did you dream about last night?
Something weird about a life guard at the leisure centre owning a building I had something to do with.

3. What’s the next piece of music you intend to buy?
I seem to be buying music based only on chance at the moment, I got everything I need.

4. What was the last film you saw?
Elephant… interesting and precarious subject. It left us all feeling lots of different things, what a good film should do.

5. What’s the most important thing you’ve ever done?
I sway between moments where everything is important and moments where I realise we’re all too small to be important. It’s a big question, bigger than me

6. Highest point?
Playing Brixton Academy, the place we grew up watching “real” bands.

7. Lowest point?
A careers interview in Wandsworth, can’t tell the story, it’s not nice but I almost became a horse jockey

8. Where do you wish you could be right now, other than where you are?
It’s pretty good to appreciate where I am right now, but I always like being on a hot beach or on a trip in a place where I’m learning more than the price of a beer.

9. Your favourite possession?
I’ve gone off possessions, give me a good conversation from a decent person, it’s getting rare!

10. Any plans for tonight?
The plan is to lie low, stay low, shut up, stop being clever
