You could probably get high just listening to The
Warlocks. You know, high like they used to get in
the 60s, that collective generic anonymous high that
the collective 60s anecdote speaks so highly of. Like
every inhalation handed you a new rung for your ladder
to the clouds. That kind of bliss, imaginary as it may
actually have been. You’ll tumble into their album ‘Phoenix’
like Alice tumbled into Wonderland. If you’ve never
taken a drug it’s as good and safe an introduction as
you’ll get, probably. There’s no real hiding what this
record’s made of and on. Radio may have renamed ace
and heavily hung single ‘Shake The Dope Out’
as ‘Shake’ to protect the innocents, but the heavy aroma
practically seeps from the speakers. If you want a more
direct history lesson than you’re getting from BRMC
then The Warlocks are your men, and woman. It’s
like Hawkwind firing supernovas at the Velvet
Underground. It’s biting and hummable and absorbing
and beautiful and it takes on an even more hypnotising
potency live. They’re the kind of band that aren’t a
band, they’re an experience. One of the three guitarists,
Corey Lee Granet, took just a few moments out
to let us peek through the impenetrable fug.
1. Where are you now and what can you see?
I’m at home looking at the hills of Echo Park where
I live.
2. What did you have for breakfast?
Yoghurt for fuck’s sake.
3. What was the last thing that made you blush?
I don’t blush anymore, must be hormonal.
4. What’s the next piece of music you intend to buy?
‘Moon Pix’ by Cat Power. An ex-girlfriend appropriated
it in the break-up. Chan Marshall calms me.
5. What was the last film you saw? Why?
I saw 28 Days Later. Do I really need a reason to see
a damn movie? To kill time I guess. It did just that,
killed time.
6. What did you dream about last night?
Zombies eating me alive, and me not having any health
insurance. What a nightmare.
7. What’s the most important thing you’ve ever done?
Graduated high school with good marks. Pretty sad really.
Oh yeah and saved my friends life a few times. He really
should be more careful.
8. Where do you wish you could be right now, other
than where you are?
In Italy at a cafe with a beautiful girl. Maybe some
champagne and a rented Vespa.
9. Why did you choose what you’re wearing today?
I swear to god I am naked right now. I was about to
take a shower when this Q and A arrived on my computer.
Describe it? Well, everything seems to be in its place.
No complaints.
10. Any plans for tonight?
A fancy Beverly Hills party. Going to fuck shit up,
raid the medicine cabinet and whatnot.
