Who doesn’t like the B-52s?
It’s a reasonable question, don’t you think. Everyone does. Okay, so you probably
just danced awkwardly to ‘Love Shack’ at every school disco/wedding you’ve ever
been to. But still, imagine that as your wild card choice on a fantasy playlist,
nestling amongst inordinately cooler stuff from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Raveonettes,
Sleater Kinney, The Breeders, Sons & Daughters and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.
And fantasies are nice, opined New York’s The Rogers Sisters (siblings Jennifer
and Laura, and outsourced bassist/singer Miyuki Furtado) on 2005’s mini-album
‘Three Fingers’. And of course they’re right, because they are that exact fantasy.
Not to mention sassy, sparking and quite splendid indeed. Twisted-aluminum riffs
jab at jibing rhythms designed not quite for dancing, but shiftying joyously,
tossing around girl/boy/girl vocal tête-à-têtes of increasing ferocity, all bound
in a bubblegum wrapping. If that bubblegum had been recalled due to embedded gunpowder,
and nails. Ahead of their proper full debut release, ‘The Invisible Deck’, at
the end of March we cajole a few short answers to basic questions out of them.
We’ve kind of covered the first one anyway… 1. Who are you? Where do
you come from? Why are you here? Isn't that 3 questions? 2.
Who set the watermark for you in 2005? Who's the one to beat? Kanye
West 3. Name one way you see the world changing in 2006. Violence
will continue to escalate everywhere 4. Have you made new year's resolutions? Not
really. I guess to tour a lot. 5. We're going to still give a damn about
you in January 2007 because… We will do something new and interesting 6.
