You, like us, still love Pavement, don’t you? And Flaming Lips,
and Grandaddy? Of course you do, why wouldn’t you? And why wouldn’t The Spinto
Band? No reason. Precisely. Which is why they obviously do. They wobble that
potentially glorious line dividing plagiarism from tribute and put enough gleeful
bounding thrust behind their jaunty US indie craic to fall the right side of the
divide pretty much, from what we can gather so far, every time. On their last
single, the AA-sided ‘Mountains/Brown Boxes’ they came across like a less uptight
Weezer being tickled by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah under the direction of one of
Wayne Coyne’s glove puppets. A veritable full lather of odd-shaped pop psychedelia
with an oversized smile. They’ve just toured the UK, where we gleaned the following
information from them, and they’ll be back later in the year beginning with a
follow up single on 6th March and presumably their debut album sometime after
that. 1. Who are you? Where do you come from? Why are you here? We
are the Spinto Band from Wilmington, Delaware. We're here on a tour. 2.
Who set the watermark for you in 2005? Who's the one to beat? The one
to beat is John Higgins for sure. It's a shame we can't do it at the Wembley Conference
Centre though. 3. Name one way you see the world changing in 2006. The
average global temperature will probably increase. 4. Have you made a
new year's resolution? We have resolved to play more dice. 5.
We're going to still give a damn about you in January 2007 because… All
the other rock bands will have died of bird flu. 6. Name your tip for
'06. National Eye and The Teeth are both great bands. It's a shame that
they will die of bird flu this year.
