The Longcut come from Manchester, but they don’t sound
like they come from Manchester. Which, you might say, makes a change. They don’t
sound like they’re from anywhere though, in that they sound like they’re from
everywhere, a compilation of the best acts that have shoved guitar music around
with an iron rod in recent years, burned for you by a savvy older brother. There’s
a touch of Mogwai, The Rapture, The Faint, Sonic Youth, Foo Fighters to make them
palatable and, just to keep the hometown happy, Joy Division. And that’s just
scratching the surface. They’re baggy, dance, art and post-rock racked through
with electricity, and you can’t see the seams. Their live shows are incendiary,
they were the low-key revelation of the 2005 festival circuit and one of Crud’s
most exciting discoveries last year. This year will see continued touring and,
at some point, the release of their debut album. 1. Who are you? Where
do you come from? Why are you here? We are Stuart, Lee and Jon. We
come from various towns in the north, and came together in Manchester in 2001.
We are here to try to condense all of our record collections into as small a space
as possible, then make it sound huge and play it to as many people as we can.
2. Who set the watermark for you in 2005? Who’s the one to beat?
The Arcade Fire’s Funeral was the best record for us this year. Emotionally
and sonically it has such range and depth, and you can listen to it in almost
any situation, and we have! Their live show at Leeds festival blew us away. It
was like a tidal wave of sound from the first note. The one to beat is James Blunt.
With a big fucking stick. 3. Name one way you see the world changing
in 2006. Radioactive monsters, from outer space, will bring peace to
mankind, through Buddhist meditation. 4. Have you made a new year’s
resolution? Try to make more time for drinking with friends, though
it may be hard with our schedule. 5. We’re going to still give a damn
about you in January 2007 because… You have exceptional taste and style.
6. Name your tip for ’06. Polytechnic. Great discordant pop
songs, and only the first of the new wave of Manchester bands that will be filling
the pages of the press this year. Check out Akoustik Anarkhy’s ‘Class aA’ and
High Voltage’s ‘Power Overload’ compilations.
