The Beach Boys’ universally
acknowledged, genius defining, hip-swivelling1966 album Pet Sounds celebrates
its 40th anniversary this year. For this reason and this reason only (rather than
for any unseemly monetary gain) EMI Music Catalogue will celebrate the
four-decade milestone by re-releasing the whole kit and caboodle in a big starry
deluxe limited edition (suede-feel) CD/DVD digipak featuring this classic
album in Mono, Stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and Hi-Res
96kHz/24-bit PCM Stereo. Not bad, eh? Why the suede-feel cover? Absolutely
no idea, but I do know that it’s going to be a bugger to clean once you’ve literally
creamed yourself over the wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling, speaker-to-speaker,
spine-tingling Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound remix. That’s even before
you take advantage of the handsome extras to be found by way of the other stuff
on the DVD: six film and video cuts including a behind-the-scenes documentary,
“The Making Of Pet Sounds;” “Pet Stories,” featuring interviews with Brian Wilson,
lyricist Tony Asher and members of the original “wrecking crew” Hal Blaine, Carol
Kaye, Don Randi, Frankie Capp and Tommy Morgan; the never-before-released 1966
promotional colour ‘firehouse’ film clip for “Good Vibrations;” original 1966
promotional black & white film clips for “Sloop John B” and Pet Sounds, and an
excerpt from the unreleased BBC television documentary, “Rhythm of Life,” in which
Sir George Martin joins Brian Wilson in the studio for a discussion of the album’s
musical significance. Pet Sounds: 40th Anniversary’s DVD also contains a photo
gallery set to the classic music of “God Only Knows” and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround
Sound and Hi-Res 96 kHz/24-bit PCM Stereo audio mixes of the album plus a Hi-Res
96 kHz/24-bit PCM Mono mix of bonus track “Hang On To Your Ego.” Fair enough
only those of a very anal retentive disposition are likely to be impressed by
the mono/stereo combination but for those not afraid to download the whole thing
as a special ‘Sessions’ digital bow-set (available through ITunes
from 28/08/06) you’ll be bowled-over and blown by a veritable tome of pitifully
rare material, from alternate versions of ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’, ‘Here Today’
and ‘You Still Believe In Me’ plus dozens of vocal stacks, overdubs, A Capella
mixes, different vocalist tracks, and dozens of intricate highlights from the
backing tracks. You’ve probably quoted this album so long without actually
hearing it that you really owe it to yourself to put this one in the bag. Big
and beautiful. And that’s just Brian. Track Listing: Disk 1 1. Wouldn't
