| A growing army of fans, eh?
A militia. Good things seldom arise from any group of citizens organizing themselves
into a paramilitary force, in my view. Just look at Embrace. They had a growing
army of fans and look what happened: for two years violent tensions erupted in
the charts as persons loyal to bitter-sweet anthems of unity and devotion lay
assault to the heart of a nation’s better judgment. And we’re still suffering
the fallout some 10 years later. Anyhoos, here’s a similar redeployment of arms.
Sweet, melancholy drama, boundary pushing falsetto, emotional northern uproar.
Like Coldplay, like Embrace – only good with it. Four Day Hombre
snook on to the burgeoning Leeds music scene as far back as 1999 travelling not
on a tour bus, not in a van even, but high on the crest of one simple premise:
the music they produced and all the weirder shit besides had to be honest. With
a little inspiration from bands like The Frames, Spiritualized, Johnny Cash, Guns
IM' Roses, Beach Boys, dEUS, and Neil Diamond, the band released their 2003 debut
single 'First Word is the Hardest' that culminated in a live appearance on the
Chris Moyles Show. Now the Four Hombreros are back with new single ‘Don’t Go
Gently’. Crud joins the band’s ivory-tickler, Ed Waring for a look at their
daily coordinates. 1. Where are you now? What can you see?
I'm lying in my bed in Leeds. I can see various piles of clothes, bits of yesterday's
paper, my knees and my laptop.
2. What was the last thing you ate?
A lovely special curry from Akbars in Leeds.
3. What was
the last album you bought? I can't actually remember! We're in the middle
of writing our second album and I'm in the starting the process of recording some
other bands and so everything I'm listening to at the moment tends to be unfinished
demos.... Does buying Uncut magazine count?
4. What was the
last movie you saw? At the cinema it was X-Men 3... Disappointing.
I loved the first one cos it had a fantastically shiny comic book surface but
had enough going on behind that to actually be quite moving. The third was just
all surface and kinda dull because of it... The last great movie I saw was Everything
is Illuminated on DVD. Very good film....
5. What are you most
looking forward to? Not feeling tired. It might come at some point.
6. What do you hate right now? On a personal level it's technology
that doesn't work as it should. So much of my days at the moment seem to be taken
up applying electronic band aids to stuff instead of actually making music. On
a global level, I'm making a list and checking it twice. I'll keep you informed....
oh, and the Daily Mail can kiss my ring.
7. What was the last thing
you saw that you liked on TV? The BBC 2 series of World Cup Stories was
brilliant. Tying in the world cup histories of 6 of the most famous footballing
nations to the social and political changes happening in their cultures over the
last 50 years was fascinating. Planet Earth was pretty stunning to watch as well....
8. Where or how do you feel most comfortable? Somewhere loud,
with loved ones.
9. What would you class as your most defining moment?
Hearing Appetite for Destruction for the first time when I was about
14 or 15. Almost everything I do now probably stems from in some way from that
moment....
10. What are your plans for tonight? Easy one
tonight I reckon... bit of work, bit of world cup, bit of home cooked food...
You know, just generally living the dream....
