Little Man Tate, Leeds, Cockpit , 05.05.2006

Little Man Tate

Bake for 50 minutes at Gas Mark 6. Little Man Tate take the short trip up to Leeds and baste the already oven ready Cockpit crowd. Crud's Toby Juliff has us licking us lips...

08/05/2006

If the Arctic Monkey’s are part of the noughties Sheffield renaissance then chirpy quartet Little Man Tate are the Sheffield enlightenment. Snappy and bright, these guys swagger around the stage as if they own the place. (Perhaps they did, well for tonight anyway.) The cheeky regional charm that can sound weedy and hammy (Cazals anyone?) has been thankfully downplayed and lead John Windle comes across as a genuine and – shock horror – witty bloke you’d happily let your 2nd favourite sister date.

The Cockpit buzzed and the very hot and humid, but happy, crowd rumbaed and twitched along for all their post-pubescent might (quite considerable it was too). Whilst Brit-poppy tunes ‘I hate your band’ and upcoming single ‘What? What You Got’ leave you thinking that you’ve heard it all before, there’s something more interesting to be found in the suburban punk of ‘Just Can’t Take It’ and ‘Young Offenders’. They’re maybe not offering the most profound thesis for someone – like me – growing up in the late 80s and early 90s (I have the Fall Out Boys for that) they are a necessary quick-step ahead of most local feeble Generations Nexters.

The ‘Taters’ (as I like to call them) have clearly gained a lot from their recent NME club tour and produced a professional and slick set even if it was a bit on the brief side. Chirpy and infectious, these likeable guys deserve to do well. It seems, like their beloved Blades, Little Man Tate Utd are heading up to the Premiership. Let’s hope they fare better than Sunderland did last season…
