The 90s are a distant memory. The upper rungs of the
charts are no longer a metaphor for the British class
system. Camden’s character is crumbling under a torrent
of chain-stores, inexplicably shiny bars and unwanted
developments. Blur have lost the one member anyone should
give a fuck about and turned into Damon’s Ego (Featuring
Bongos). Pulp’s greatest hits sold about 3 copies.
Shed Seven are struggling to fill a week of gigs
in a venue the size of a postage stamp. And The Bluetones
are currently steaming around the UK on a sell-out 50-date
tour! Yes, a 50 DATE tour. Don’t ask us how or why,
just accept it. And they have in the bag ‘Luxembourg’,
their most chipper and gleaming album to date, out May
12. Really, it’s top. Guitarist Adam Devlin took
time to let us in his head before doing Birmingham,
date 30 on the tour that never ends.
1. Where are you now? What can you see?
In Birmingham, I can see a dressing room wall and a
mountain of booze.
2. What was the first thing you thought about today?
I hope they have a big branch of ‘Boots’ in Birmingham…they
do!
3. What’s your favourite European city?
Barcelona’s a good one – city on a beach with good weather
and food and footy!
4. What do you hate about each other?
Very little we are genuinely a very loving brotherhood.
5. What was the last album you bought?
An Osmonds compilation… it’s all pooh except ‘Crazy
Horses’, but that is why I bought it.
6. What was the last movie you saw?
American Graffiti and Polookaville on Monday, both very
good films.
7. What inspired you most to become what you are
today?
Other people who did what I do in the past….George Harrison,
Jonny Marr, Paul Simon etc
8. What one job/task/phone call/chore are you forever
putting off?
Getting a real job.
9. How fit are you?
Was quite fit before this tour started, now I am a drunken
slob.
10. What are your plans for tonight?
After our gig in Brum, we are doing some acoustic songs
on The Janice Long Show then we’ll play cards until
the sun comes up or we pass out.
