CO-ORDINATES - WHERE THE STARS AT AT/STELLASTARR*

James Berry asks singer SHAWN CHRISTENSEN of STELLASTARR* 'Where's Your Head At?

16/11/2003

They might seem, at first glance (and second, possibly third too, to be fair), like the sort who have a plot paid for and reserved next to JJ72 in indie-rock’s graveyard. But at first glance they don’t look like the sort who are capable of creating the Semtex-up-Blondie’s-ass overdriven modern pop masterpiece that was their debut album. But they did, it’s got their names on the sleeve and everything if you’re still unsure. It’s the sort of debut record that makes you half wish they don’t go and spoil it by getting as far as making a second. But then secretly you hope they do, even though they’ll be a bit older then and it probably just won’t work, as long as they don’t steal this one away. The art school adolescents-at-heart have been tearing around the UK under the wing of Jane’s Addiction (who though probably profess to being an artistic statement in themselves, aren’t really that at all these days) and more suitably on their own. We grabbed a few electronic words with frontman Shawn from a dressing room north of the border.

1. Where are you now and what can you see?
A dressing room in Glasgow and I see beer. Lots of beer.

2. What was the last thing you ate?

Thai chicken curry and rice.

3. What’s worth watching on TV?

The Simpsons of course.

4. What’s the next piece of music you intend to buy?

A compilation of composer Bernard Herrman. Because he scored Taxi Driver and many Hitchcock films which were brilliant.

5. What was the last film you saw?
Lost in Translation. I loved it. The pacing and mood were extremely seductive and I found myself not wanting it to end. Or maybe it was crap and I’m just in love with that Scarlet Johanessen.

6. Who would you have play you in the movie of your life?
Morgan Freeman. Who else?

7. What’s the stupidest thing you’ve ever done?
So many stupid things, so little time. I suppose entering the music industry was pretty stupid. Also Just about ever geeky thing I ever did all through school was embarrassingly stupid and I’m still chalking up those brilliant moments today.

8. What possession do you hold dearest?
I’m not one for material possessions, but if my house burned down I’d grab the guitar and the gifts from my dear Nina.

9. Paintbrush or plectrum?
Paintbrush please.

10. Any plans for tomorrow?
I’ll end up sleeping all day and then wander over to the European Music Awards I think. If not, Glasgow is always a good time. Always.
