| The thumping techno intro
to ‘Glitter and Trauma’ stomps its way across the Electric Ballroom, as the lights
come up, a bare backed and distinctively hairy Simon Neil waits. Looking disturbingly
like a dark Kurt Cobain, he leads Biffy on an intense offensive. They’re to genre
what George Bush is to diplomacy. Post punk, probably. A little hardcore? Maybe.
Unhinged, most definitely. Delivering anthems without becoming indulgent,
they teeter on epic. Able to change the mood and tempo of a song with schizophrenic
ease, means the crazed kids at the front don’t leave disappointed. Having sold
out the venue and the notoriously loyal fans there in force, most songs result
in sing a longs. From favourites like ‘Questions and Answers’ to new songs ‘Strung
To Your Ribcage’ when it’s loud, the chorus reigns, and when it’s gentle there
isn’t a lonely heart in the place. From the humble insecurity, to the thrashes
of post punk energy, Biffy Clyro remain a band for the fans. Understated and underrated. Relevant
