It is increasingly rare to come across a project that almost defies
description, where pigeon holes no longer make any sense.
1
Giant Leap whilst pushing the points of new media and spectacle to
the limit and making imaginative leaps of creativity also plays host
to a whole range of collaborators and conspirators: MICHAEL STIPE,
KURT VONNEGUT, ASHA BHOSLE, DENNIS HOPPER, BRIAN ENO, BAABA MAAL,
TOM ROBBINS, MAXI JAZZ FROM FAITHLESS, NENEH CHERRY, THE MAHOTELLA
QUEENS, SPEECH FROM ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, EDDI READER AND LINTON
KWEZI JOHNSON.
To confirm the ambition of the project 'My Culture' featuring Maxi
Jazz and Robbie Williams is released on 8th April 2002 in the UK
whilst the upcoming single in the US, 'Braided Hair' featuring Neneh
Cherry and Speech is also out on April 8th. Both
singles look set to be hugley enjoyed precursors to a summer of sassy
and upbeat global love.
1 Giant Leap are JAMIE CATTO AND DUNCAN BRIDGEMAN who first met at
a mutual friends house in Brighton, England. The two found that they
shared a love for two albums in particular: DAVID BYRNE AND BRIAN
ENO'S 'MY LIFE IN THE BUSH OF GHOSTS' AND PETER GABRIEL'S "PASSION-MUSIC
FOR MARTIN SCORSESE'S FILM "THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST" The two
talked music, technology, trave and the universe and their mutual
obsession with travelling the world recording and filmimg as many
crodd-media icons from as many different areas as they could: music,
art, literature, philosophy, science, seeking out (as in their own
words) 'the unity in the diversity' . Fortunatley for them, Palm
Pictures supremo, Chris Blackwell shared their vision and offered
the pair a contarct.
Getting everybody else involved, however, meant an avalanche of
cold-calling, not that interest was difficult to muster. Dennis Hopper
was so enthused by the project that he immediately got on the phone
to Harvey Keitel and Meryl Streep to get them involved.
Fusing spoken word, sounds, rhythms and images from across the
world, 1 Giat Leap is a tasteful and legitimate celebration of the
bio-diversity of art's gallery of lost souls: musicians, storytellers,
authors, thinkers, image-makers, film-makers with results that beautifully
illustrate one clear enveloping message of unity.
CATTO AND BRIDGEMAN travelled the globe recording all the artists
on digital equipment as the basis for a 12 chapter film and album.
Each film chapter corresponds to a track on the album and explores
some equally significant theme such as "MASKS", "DEATH", "" AND "BLASPHEMY".Having
shot a whole bunch of footage from the streets of New York to the
jungles of Ghana, the mountains of Nepal to the deserts of Rajssthan
the film makes a compelling documentary and soundtrack to a crystalline
moment in history that is now.
"My Culture" is the first single to be taken from the CD in the
UK and features the unmistakable vocals of Faithless' front man and
Brixton legend, Maxi Jazz, alongside unruly prince of pop
Robbie Williams, who for once seems to dispense with the safe-bet
irony of usual self-conscious bluff.
With Jamie being a founder member of Faithless, Maxi's involvement
isknown to be no great surprise. In Robbie's case his involvement
came towards the end of the project: "I was proud to be asked to
contribute my very small part to what I think is going to be one
of the greatest records this year - and the most profound".
