K's Choice; the Belgian band formed by sister
and brother Sarah (lead vocals and guitar) and
Gert Bettens (vocals and guitar); are going to
release their fourth studio album "Almost Happy"
on May 7. "This is our first really big record in
the States so, we're really anxious to see what happens
within the next couple of weeks," Says big brother Gert
with excitement dripping off every word. "We hope that
everyone really likes this album."
"Almost Happy" is a very strong and personal record
that American audiences, much like European audience
will fall in love with. The album really captures the
strengths and weakness, insecurities and confidence,
trials and tribulations that every person can relate
to on one level or another. "My lyrics are very personal
and very individual and I always like it when other
people can relate to them and you realize that all of
your personal problems are really universal things that
everyone has either thought or felt at some point of
their lives." Explains Sarah. "The lyrics appeal to
pretty much, everybody and I think there's an audience
for this, it's not too difficult to like."
Their first single, (title track "Almost Happy") is
a mood swaying folkish number in the spirit of Sarah
McLachlan and Jewel. It paints the dismal and sullen
portrait of one person's inner frustration and emptiness.
"It's not that my brother and I are unhappy people,
but the search for happiness is difficult sometimes."
Says Sarah, "I wrote that song about someone else and
then I realized that it could have been about me too.
It's like you have everything and all the right reasons
to be happy but still there's this one piece that you
just can't seem to find. It's not just what 'Almost
Happy' is about but what many of the other songs are
about too."
"Almost Happy" on SMI (Sony Music International distributed
by RED) was recorded at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios
in Bath, England, the music fuses the sultriest elements
of rock, folk and pop to create a delicate yet expansive
sound that is unique and fresh. Put Alanis Morresette,
Sarah McLachlan and Jewel with a touch of Sheryl Crow
all in a blender and what you get is K's Choice.
Their music is beautifully written and wonderfully performed.
Sarah & Gert truly bare their souls on this album. Songs
such as "Tired," "Somewhere" and "We're Already There"
are full of autobiographical lyrics that resonate with
Sarah's breathtaking, smoky voice. "It all comes from
my every day life," Explains Sarah of her lyrical inspiration.
"It's all my own experiences.. How I go through life
and how I find balance. How I look for peace and the
role that other people play in my life, how love plays
in my life and stuff that most people can relate to."
K's Choice; who also includes Jan Van Sichem Jr. (guitar),
Eric Grossman (bass) and Koen Lieckens (drums); will
release "Almost Happy" with a bonus live disc recorded
in concerts in Belgium, Holland, France and Germany
during 2001. "We love to play live," Says Gert, "We
try and play everything with the means that we're carrying.
We don't really take keyboards on the road and we're
much more stripped down. We try and do everything with
the guitars, so it gives off a whole different vibe
all together."
