Their year started with some quiet, deserved acclaim
for the satisfyingly rich ‘Pioneers’ EP, continuing
with the happy-sad ‘Same Picture’ single, possibly the
actual sound of spring turning into summer. They toured
with Electric Soft Parade, Elbow and the Flaming Lips,
receiving some especially big love from Wayne Coyne
who devotedly surveyed from stage right every night.
They curated and staged their own annual Truck Festival
on a farm in Oxfordshire in July, playing host to 3,000
festival goers in search of the ultimate independent
muddy turf experience. And to take this year up to a
close they’ve just released the slight and beautiful
‘Wide Open Sky’ single, to be followed shortly after
by the debut album, ‘Don’t Bring Me Down’, on 9th September.
They have squeezed some juice back from the tired old
rag that mainstream songwriting had generally become.
They are the sound of rural contemplation, lost loves
and emotional spider webs clinging to stone walls in
the morning dew. They’re folk like Nick Drake, but a
bit more back to front like Gorkys. They write songs
like you always thought Gomez might one day then didn’t.
And very occasionally they can leave the ground and
let go like Elbow do so well. They might not change
your life, but they’ll sure as hell make your afternoon
seem a lot better.
Goldrush are a fine band and they have indeed gone and
made a fine album. And you can listen to this entire
album courtesy of Crud and our online peers up until
the week of release with this exclusive online listening
party. Click here to launch the Goldrush web-wheel.
Crud hosts the closing track ‘Dead’. You can skip through
the rest of the album by using the arrows. Stick a bit
of straw between your teeth, lie back, cock your hat
forward and enjoy.
