CO-ORDINATES - WHERE THE STARS ARE AT/MURDER BY DEATH

MURDER BY DEATH

Crud asks Matt Armstrong of MURDER BY DEATH, 'Where's Your Head At?'

14/03/2007

Murder By Death are a cliché, but they’re a bloody great one. If they were an actor they’d be typecast, but only because they’re so perfect for the part. They’re that enigmatic guy from the deep south in American movies that’s always at the bar, alone, face obscured by the low light, stubble predominant, probably playing with the last match in the flip-pack to the sound of soul-scraping blues, always ready with a story for the despondent stranger that has just pulled up a stool next to them in need of a talking to but not wanting one. They get one, of course. Next thing you know about, naturally, will be waking up on some motel room floor staring at the ceiling fan, feeling like you’ve been both ways through the grinder. But possibly reborn in some way too. Put simply they’re Mark Lanegan and Nick Cave’s dark test-tube love child and are releasing one of the year’s grittiest albums in ‘In Bocca Al Lupo’. We grabbed the thoughts of bassist Matt Armstrong while we were still with them in the figurative bar…

Where are you now? What can you see?
In my living room. I can see a rainy day through the window, as well as our beloved van, the pork chop express.

What was the last thing you ate?

Chicken wings, followed by Rolaids.

What was the next album you intend to buy?
The new Aereogramme album, because I’ve heard it and it is amazing and those guys are criminally underappreciated.

What was the last movie you saw?
Hannibal rising. I don't know how to feel about it yet. If they don't make another movie to follow this one and connect the dots, then this movie sucked and shouldn't have been made. Either way, Gong Li is in it and it was worth the money to me just to see her.

What are you most looking forward to?
In the immediate future I am most looking forward to writing a new album and touring like crazy.

What do you hate right now?
Snow. Paris Hilton. rap rock.

What was the last thing you saw on TV that you liked?
Metalocalypse, and Rome on HBO.

Where or how do you feel most comfortable?
Stretched out on the couch.

Was yesterday better than today?
I don't know yet, but I hope not. Stay tuned for details...

What are your plans for tonight?
I’m playing it by ear.
