| 'Starry, spectral and as warm as an electric-blanket soaked
in lighter-fluid'. That's what we said about ROEBECK'S debut single 'Remember'.
Not that we remember writing it, but a right old lunar cocktail we concluded,
and conclude it again we do still in light of the band's follow-up EP '22 Seconds'
(released 26.06.06). Lazy baggy, beats loaf around delicate open-tunings, scratchy
intros, muted keys and growling mini-moogs. The two guys behind the project,
Luke C. and Brett Booth, have worked together for almost 5 years penning and producing
tracks for various independent labels in the UK. In 2004 their debut under the
Phat Gecko moniker secured them exposure on a global level. The track appeared
on EMI’s Now Dance 2004 having double charted on Music Week Magazine’s ‘Club Breakers’
and ‘Pop Commercial’ charts for over a month. Early 12" releases from Luke C.
had received strong support from the likes of Yousef (BBC radio1), John Marsh
(The Beloved). Praise indeed, eh? Assuming you're aware of either of them. Now
with an album ready for release early next year, Robeck are said to have gone
back to their roots and early musical influences. We tracked down Luke C. for
a little head to head. 1. Where are you now? What can you see?
Lying on the floor with my laptop…through the window I see the City of London
glittering in the night .
2. What was the last thing you ate?
Thai noodle soup.
3. What was the last album you bought? Have
been pretty skint lately …think it was the Phil Spector CD box set though.
4. What was the last movie you saw? Forbidden Planet.
5. What
are you most looking forward to? Recovering from flu…!
6. What
do you hate right now? Have one virus too many inside me at the moment..
and I hate them all…oh yes!
7. What was the last thing you saw that
you liked on TV? …uhmmmm…on TV you say??
8. Where or how do
you feel most comfortable? Gently strumming my 12string guitar..
9. What would you class as your most defining moment? An afternoon
in Denmark Street with £400 to spend.
10. What are your plans for
tonight? Milk & Honey..then hit the sack
