CO-ORDINATES - WHERE THE STARS ARE AT/STORY ONE

NERINA PALLOT

James Berry asks Tom Evans of STORY ONE, 'Where's Your Head At?'...

06/10/2005

Story One have themselves one particular problem that is likely to reoccur as a headline as they attempt to blossom past a prologue. Tom Evans, lead singer of the Nottingham 3-piece, shares a dredged rough vocal style with one Kelly Jones, from certain angles at the very least. With Jones though it serves as the most evident nadir of a pit full of dragging mediocrity, but Evans at least has a lightly-whipped, dance-on-the-breeze thrust of acoustic pop behind him. It reminds more than anything else of late introvert-strummers Ben & Jason, who were themselves an English-as-stinky-ale-and-PG-Tips take on the subtle extravagance of Jeff Buckley. They also have a violin painting pretty flourishes across the backdrop, a la Hope of the States or The National, which is a nice appropriately proportioned touch. Their ‘EP’, out on 26 September, contains 3 heartily performed tracks of warmth and understated passion. We caught up with them on tour to find out where there heads are at…

1. Where are you now? What can you see?
We’re in a tour bus and we’ve just passed a sign for Beverley and Hull!

2. What was the last thing you ate?

A moreish coconut waferbite.

3. What was the next album you intend to buy?
Sigur Ros ‘Takk’.

4. What was the last film you saw?
‘Withnail & I’ on the bus. What went wrong with Richard E Grant? Why is he doing Argos Ads – he is a genius?!

5. What are you most looking forward to?
Getting out of this van!!

6. What do you hate right now?
Little Chef.

7. Do you have nightmares?
Barny had a nightmare he lost his penis.

8. Do you feel older than you did 6 months ago?
Yeah 6 months.

9. Have you ever felt like you’ve failed?

We couldn’t finish the 5 stack hamburger at the cheesecake factory in LA (It was the size of a man’s head!)

10. What are your plans for tonight?
Playing a gig in Hull
