| Sean Cook, you would think, is due a break. To recap
– he played on and toured Spiritualized’s definitive work ‘Ladies & Gentlemen
We Are Floating In Space’ at the end of last century before tumultuously exiting
in a blaze of bad feeling and poisonous words. In response he formed Lupine
Howl who released one album of competitively spaced-out retro psychedelia
that received plaudits but little in the way of popular acclaim. Now setting up
stall under his own steam as The Flies, he’s got an album ready for release
early next year that strikes a rounded poise, favouring the softly-softly kaleidoscope
ambience of The Doors, Love, Burt Bacharach and to an extent his former employer.
There’s also a damn slick web HQ (www.the-flies.com) and a number of iTunes and
Napster exclusives, including the current time-limited video download of his Jeff
Buckley-esque take on The Rolling Stones’ classic ‘Ruby Tuesday’. We caught up
with him the day before the shoot. He’s far from verbose, but hey, don’t forget
it’s damn hard work being this moody and enigmatic. Wouldn’t want him to slip
a disc or anything. 1. Where are you now? What can you see?
In the studio. Bottle of Beck’s, keyboard and guitar and our pr agent…
2. What was the last thing you ate? I can’t remember.

Yeah, a couple of good songs on it but you still miss Pete Dfreitas.
4. What was the last movie you saw? ‘China Town’. I thought it was
really good actually. A film I should have watched years ago and have had on DVD
but only just had time to watch it.
5. What are you. most looking forward
to? Why? Shooting our video for Ruby Tuesday tomorrow night.
6.
What do you hate right now? I don’t hate anything really.
7.
What was the last thing you liked that you saw on telly? Twin Peaks in
1990.
8. What time of the day or night are you at your best?
Midnight.
9. Is there anything that you believe in? The Flies…
10. What are your plans for tonight? To finish recording Ruby Tuesday
and plan tomorrow’s video shoot.
