A lot can happen in ten years. The United
Kingdom can field ten disappointing Eurovision entries,
the England Soccer Squad can blow their World Cup and
European Championship chances at least four times during
that period and Simon Cowell can take his immodest Xmas
Number 1s into double figures (providing he has Jon
and Tracy Morter to help him out). The toppling of the
Twin Towers, the first black President of the United
States, the Indonesian Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, the
7/7 bombings, the brutal yet largely uncriticized gutting
of Palestine by the Israelis, the brutal yet largely
uncriticized gutting of Iraq by the Americans and the
British, the brutal yet largely uncriticized gutting
of Afghanistan by the Americans and the British, Coronation
Street being moved from Wednesday nights to Thursday
nights, George Best at last hearing the bell for last
orders – it all happened, and as usual music provided
the soundtrack. So as you sit back in front of your
fancy 19” monitor surfing your fancy new Internet for
your fancy downloads for your fancy iPod whilst taking
a well earned break from your fancy Facebook activities,
let Crud refresh your memory of how we got here. Cue
up ‘Whole Lotta Love’ – we feel a Top 40 coming on.
The best albums of the noughties: winners in no particular
