With their music playing on soundtracks to such blockbuster
hits as The Matrix and Charlie's Angels
as well as other such films like Arlington Road, Mortal
Combat and The Jackyl you can bet Lunatic Calm is no
stranger to success. The last few years have been action
packed for the group whose debut, "Metropool" was a
huge underground hit spawning off a string of techno/industrial
tunes featured in commercials and feature films and
they have even toured the world with techno superstars,
Crystal Method.
2002 will be no exception, the group already has one
of their tracks "Leave You Far Behind," featured on
the up-coming Spider-Man Movie trailer and have just
dropped their sophomore effort entitled "Breaking Point"
which is expected to be even more successful than "Metropool."
"Breaking Point" seemed to be a very appropriate title
for this album for it literally took the band straight
to the edge. Trying desperately to record their follow-up
the group would hit more than a few bumpy roads. Aside
from and having their hands full with corporate mergers,
cut-backs, re-recording, creative differences and company
lies; Lunatic Calm would also lose their drummer (Jez
Nobel) to a "crazy stripper" in Arizona. "The last time
we were out in the states, supporting the Crystal Method
a couple of years back, (Jez) met a nice young lady
along the way. (laughs) Within a week after the tour
he was on a plane heading right back to Arizona to see
her," tells Shack, one of the founding fathers behind
Lunatic Calm. "He's now married to her and in fact,
last week they gave birth to a baby.."
The album, which actually began production way back
in 1998 with prototypes of tracks such as "Beatbox Burning"
and "Sound of the Revolution" was certainly a long time
in the making. "It was a real period of trial and error,"
says Shack. "Some of the tracks on the album really
took a long time to make and there was quite a bit of
material that was discarded and quite a few versions
of tracks that simply never made the grade. We really
wanted to fuse the hard-edged digital with a more organic
sound and a lot of that just kinda came about from jamming."
Lunatic Calm, which includes co-creator and co-collaborator
Howie Saunders, are looking forward to continued success.
They are already rumored to have a track or two featured
in the up-coming Matrix 2 and possibly a few other movies
as well. "Our music seems to lend itself quite well
with the cinematic feel," says Shack, "Me and Howie
have always shared a interest in large sounds.. Whether
it be a Metallica guitar or the sound of an orchestra
or a Chemical Brothers beat or whatever it might be,
there has always been something that has appealed to
us about that kind of depth of sound. The fact that
we're such a digital based outfit, we have kind of an
high-tech edge which the cinema relies on and we're
both kind of cut and thrust."
Shack will be performing live and deejaying in NYC on
February 13th at Static.
