The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Part.1 video

The Flaming Lips

Those bonkers, psychedelic boffins in rabbit suits are at it again. James Berry has news of the video from Yoshimi sweethearts, The Flaming Lips.

10/01/2003

The. Flaming. Lips. Say those three words to yourself and just try not to smile a stupid great beamer of a delirious dribbling smile. To the best of our knowledge the only people who don’t love them are the people who don’t know of them. And probably a couple of stupid joyless people too. 20 years after inception and a decade after the admittedly daft ‘She Don’t Use Jelly’ brought them to most people’s attention, they continue bound forth like the original human clones, with all the bad bits genetically squeezed out and an extra generous handful of enthusiasm jammed in too for good measure. ‘The Soft Bulletin’ you should already know, being one of the truly great albums of the 90s, a magnificent timeless Imax explosion of colour and heart that’s more likely to make you cry than ET. If you don’t own last year’s ‘Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots’, a series of concise cuddly sonic snapshots covered in double joy and a smattering of eclecticism, you are selling yourself short, even if you don’t know it yet.

And if you don’t happen to know it yet, not to worry, that’s what singles are for isn’t it. And to whet your appetite The Flaming Lips have one out on January 13. It’s the title track (kind of), ‘Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Part.1’, and we’ve got the video for you below. It may not feature those huge life-size and slightly unnerving cuddly toys as in the ‘Do You Realize?’ video, but it does still have Wayne Coyne grinning abundantly. If slightly unnervingly.

Thursday 16 - Manchester Academy

Saturday 18 - Bristol Academy
Monday 20 - Nottingham Rock City
Tuesday 21 & Wednesday 22 - London Forum
