THE CLINIC are Ade Blackburn (keyboard, melodica, vocals), Brian Campbell (bass, flute, vocals) Hartley (guitar, clarinet) and Carl Turney (drums, piano). Not that they need much of an introduction. Most remember this scurvy, malignant crew of scouse eccentrics for supporting Radiohead during their tour in 2000. Not that they were ships that passed in the night by any means as Radiohead have hand-picked Clinic to play this year’s Daydream Festival in Barcelona with the likes of Liars, Bat For Lashes and Low. But ahead of all that they have a new album, ‘Do It!’ to keep us busy. Described as a ‘warped technicolour celebration’ of Summer going from ‘melody to acid psychosis to acoustic’ the album is the usual mix of gritted-teeth vocals, skewed percussion, swirling Hammond organs, fuzzy guitars and no end of hallucinogens. Swerving like a drunk from Gotic alt-country (‘Tomorrow’) to the monstrously pretty (‘Free Not Free’) the latest release from the loony old fruitbats will do little to upset the fans and, one can only assume, little to upset the mainstream. Ever wondered what it would be like spending a night in a fairytale castle with Boris Karloff, Phil Spector and a bevvy of spaced-out 50s cheerleaders with fuzz-boxes? Well it would sound a little like this.
