THE LOOSE SAULTE ARE Ian McCutcheon (Drums, Vocals, Guitar), Lisa Bilson (vocals, keys), Charlotte King (harmonies, percussion, glockenspiel, guitar), Pete Greenwood (guitar) and Tinks (bass). And what’s more they’re all chums together. Fans, friends, bearers of each other’s insufferable personal habits and buddies in the creation of some of the sunniest, feelgood adult-oriented-pop this side of The Byrd’s Sweetheart of the Rodeo. Boasting on the one hand the fusty old mutton chops and cheeriness of bands like The Magic Numbers and the lazy, West Coast frothiness of bands like Kingsbury Manx and Beachwood Sparks on the other, the band’s debut – Tuned To Love – kicks up no end of ‘sunny days and mellow waves’. It’s the sound of camping out on the beach, cracking open a few beers and generally loafing around waiting for something (or nothing) to happen in a surfy Cornish hometown of your choice. With Billson’s drowsy, non-urgent vocals tipping alternately between the hapless hippy sappery of Dory Previn and the camp ditheriness of St Etienne’s Sarah Cracknell, tracks like ‘From Head To Sandy Toes’ and ‘Turn The Radio Up’ are the audio equivalent of being given a bagful of kittens and as much sunshine as you can squeeze from a fortnight in Spain. And whilst it might sound like all the girls have gatecrashed the beach, there’s no end of good vibrations from beardy Mojave 3 man, McCutcheon who rips pages from Paul Simon’s Songbook with the kind of crazy abandon traditionally reserved for children in a sweetshop.
