Less than a year since releasing undoubtedly one of
Crud’s albums of 2001 – the solid gold smatterings of
‘Y’All Get Scared Now, Ya Hear’ – and Scotland’s premier
indie supergroup the Reindeer Section are hot on their
own heels with the release of their second long player,
‘Son Of Evil Reindeer’, forthcoming on June 17th. Gary
Lightbody, gallant leader of the ‘Section and Snow Patrol
song - writing man 9-5, clearly unable to nip his creativity
in the bud has weaved another clutch of glorious melody
together and rounded up even more of his elegantly D-list
friends to help him.
Now, hold your breath. The collective now numbers 27
(or thereabouts) and features Gary and his Snow Patrol
partner Jonny Quinn, Astrid’s Neil Payne, Charlie Clarke,
Willy Campbell, Gareth Russell and Eva’s Jenny Reeve
making up the core band. Then further help was provided
by Mark McLelland (Snow Patrol) John Cummings (Mogwai),
Eugene Kelly (The Vaselines – y’know, Kurt Cobain liked
‘em), Lee Gorton, Sam Morris & Ben Dumville (Alfie),
Aidan Moffat, Malcolm Middleton & Colin MacPherson (Arab
Strap), Sarah Roberts (Eva), Roddy Woomble (Idlewild),
Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), Richard Colburn, Mick
Cooke & Bob Kildea (Belle & Sebastian), Iain Archer
(Cadet) and Stacey Sievewright, Paul Fox and Marcus
Mackay. Alright, so not every last one is a Scot, but
near enough.
The first single, the wondrous warm breeze of ‘You Are
My Joy’, is out this week on Bright Star Recordings.
Like the Lemonheads rolling around on their Belly with
old school Flaming Lips camouflaged amongst the flowers,
it’s a ray of pure pop sunshine giving a more obvious
nod to the American alt-whatever sound that was certainly
hinted at last time. It is nothing short of magnificent
and just belongs to the summertime. And not only can
you let your ears get wrapped up in the whole thing
here, you can engage your eyes with some gleeful visuals
too. Click a the link below to see the full brilliant

They’re currently trimming themselves down to a more
tourable outfit and will be hitting the road in a limited
capacity over the summer. Crud will of course let you
know the whens and hows as soon as we do.
