If you’re anything like us, for many a year there’ll
have been this great big INXS shaped hole in your heart
just waiting to be filled. So it’s with an equally huge
sigh of relief we can announce that with the release
of The Burn’s debut single that hole need gape no more.
Oh no. Influences and reference points may be pretty
far flung for this northern quartet – ranging from The
Stone Roses to The Music, Fleetwood Mac to The Coral
(eeugh!), Oasis and Starsailor – but ignore all of that
for the while.
‘The Smiling Face’ (Hut) with its anthemic bluesy bombast
and those closing-time-at-the-bar heartbreak vocals
gives the ghost of Michael Hutchence a good kick in
the ribs, sticks a cigarette in the corner of his mouth
and tosses him a bottle of JD. It doesn’t seem concerned
with much else. It is trapped in that hole and doesn’t
go any further, but it is brilliant. And how many bands
could you name right now that still play the toilets
but write to fill arenas?
They’ve spent most of the last 12 months touring the
UK with the likes of Ian Brown, Oasis, Paul Weller and
The Music and have just finished their first headline
UK tour. The first evidence from their recent studio
sessions is the new single, and why take our word for
how good it is when you can follow the link below and
hear it for yourself:
