If you weren’t lucky enough to catch these LA punk
soul n rollers giving the UK a kick in the face on the
recent Hives tour, busting some backs and breaking
some hearts themselves in more cosy club environs or
you haven’t even heard the raucous UK debut album
‘Meet the Bellrays’ yet (a compilation of tracks
from their first two US records) then you may be missing
out on something special.
The Bellrays formed in the Riverside area of Los Angeles
in the late 90s, Lisa Kekaula and Bob Vennum setting
about stripping down to basics with some honest, bare
blues and soul sounds. But with Tony Fate joining on
guitar they found that kick that we hear today on their
MC5, Stooges, James Brown pillaging punk n roll
honesty. With vocals that could probably convert a man
to anything she chose, Lisa is a diva in every right
way. And with such deep, evangelical tuneage to back
her up, where could they go wrong.
