They’re wild, crude and unpredictable on stage taking
bits and pieces of The Who, Aerosmith and Zeppelin with
their intoxicating stage presence that’s shines through
the grime with the rocking’ rebellious spirit of the
70’s. Silvertide, the band from Philadelphia, have made
a name for themselves in just over a year with their
bluesy hard stomping rock & roll that on the surface
sound a lot like the Black Crows and looks a lot like
Blind Melon.
“We have a lot of energy,” says bassist Brian Weaver,
“we want to give off our energy to the fans who already
know us and for those who don’t know us we want to make
them fans and make them love us.” Earning a reputation
as a hard rocking act with a high-energy show is what
got the attention of the legendary Clive Davis, the
former president of Arista Records and founder of J
Records. Davis scouted the band at a showcase at Philly’s
own Grape Tree Pub where he would see Silvertide’s wild
antics on stage first hand. “He came to us, man. Clive
Davis came down to Philly to see us, how cool is that?”
Weaver says with awe still dripping off his voice, “it
was pretty amazing.” During that set Silvertide didn’t
hold anything back and gave Davis the full-on Silvertide
musical assault. Lead singer, Walt Lafty, even humped
a mannequin on stage right in front of the legendary
hit maker. “There was this mannequin downstairs and
we thought it would be funny to dress it up and have
him hump her.” Says Weaver with a laugh, “It was good
fun.”
The mannequin humping didn’t put off Davis or any other
interested record exec’s, in fact Silvertide would spark
a brief bidding war between labels. After being courted
by TVT, RCA Interscope, Hollywood and Columbia Records
the boys decided to go with their gut instinct and sign
with Clive at J Records. “I feel it’s the best decision
we could have made,” says Weaver. “We get so much support
from them and it feel so much like a family here. It
was our gut instinct and we’re happy we did.”
Silvertide, (Walt Lafty; Nick Perri; Mark Melchioore
Jr.; Brian Weaver; Kevin Frank), have created a huge
buzz within the idustry and have proved that Philly
is not just R&B and soul town, it does have a rock scene
after all. “No one’s really seen a Philly rock scene
in a while,” Weaver says, “Jill Scott, Boyz 2 Men and
The Roots is what really put the Philly music scene
on the map, but you never really heard of a rock scene
here. So, it’s really cool to have a rock band come
out of Philly. I mean, the last rock band to come from
here was the Hooters..”
Their highly anticipated J Records debut will drop in
early 2003, but for now, they are shopping a 3-song
EP entitled “American Excess” that features the tracks
“Mary Jane,” “Beware” and “To see Where I Hide.” Their
music is high energy, high spirited, soul rock which
combines the scratchy vocal flavor of The Black Crows
with the grit and spunk of early GNR. Although there
is nothing new about their brand of music, it does come
off as a refreshing change of pace from all of the nu-metal,
rap-rock and grunge that is out in today’s current rock
market. “Its not like we went out and wanted to try
and play a certain type of music,” explains the bassist.
“When we play that’s what we play, ya know. Its just
the influences we had growing up, stuff we’d listen
to growing up. Its just how each one of us plays is
how the music comes out.”
“Our ultimate goal is making a great album,” says Weaver,
“an album that’s gonna give off the same energy we give
off live and continue making a name for ourselves and
just making great music.” But, its not so much the music
that makes Silvertide a stand-out band, it’s the spirit
they convey, the true rock and roll conviction with
a heart that beats a surge of life that goes beyond
a musical formula. In short, Silvertide are doing it
just the way every rock and roll band should- with attitude...
Plenty of balls-out attitude.
