It starts off with a soft black and white film clipette
of a girl floating on her back through rippled waters
and then cuts to shots of that girl and a man – a companion,
a boyfriend, a casual lover, who’s to say – lazing around,
walking through streets in the sunshine, heads crashed
on pillows, on the beach as waves lap up gently. An
innocent, personal and above all happy road movie that
could be taken from any recent era. All the while the
most sumptuous sun-kissed melodies and guitar strokes
build as the soundtrack, hushed words reminiscing about
“when we were young”, epic and simple. Sounding like
the sleepier, uncomplicated cousin to the Delgados’
luscious ‘American Trilogy’ it is simply a beautiful
piece.
That is the video for ‘Ron’, which you can experience
for yourself by clicking below. They are Joy Zipper,
a male/female duo from Long Island, New York, a snapshot
of independent, carefree, untied America. They even
have gorgeous names that you’d snuggle up to for warmth
– Vinny Cafiso and Tabitha Tindale. Their second album,
‘American Whip’, is to be released January 2003. We
suggest you should be awaiting the new year with a faint
eagerness. From other tracks we’ve heard they take frames
from REM, the Breeders, Velvet Underground, Stereolab,
Belle & Sebastian and The Lemonheads, but don’t sound
like any of them individually. Perfect lazy music, with
a strong heartbeat. We like and we think you will to.
No effort required.
