| You know there’s that train
of thought that says owners always resemble their dogs, in one way or another
(and if you’ve never seen the film ‘Best In Show’, do, soon). Well, the same can
be said for a band and their music, right? In the case of Editors singer Tom Smith,
certainly. He is wiry, elastic, nourished but gaunt looking, and possessing quite
a tightly wound coil of confidence. You’ve heard ‘Bullets’ and ‘Munich’? The later
just missed out on the top 20 for possessing those very qualities and towering
above those nearest competitors doing more for increasing the royalties coming
off ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ than ensuring their own memory lives on. 2 singles
do not a legendary band make, but a recent live encounter revealed them to be
in possession of a full rack of taut, springy, baritone pop of sensible length
and with a twist nearly always lurking just beneath the surface. We spoke to the
aforementioned lanky frontman out on tour to find out where his head’s at ahead
of their debut album’s summer release.
Where are you now? What can
you see? On the road from Aberdeen to Dundee. A church and a big sign
saying how god is full of surprises.
What was the last thing you ate?
Breakfast brunch, £6, from Brewers Fayre…chips with breakfast was weird,
but I got over it.
What was the next album you intend to buy?
Arcade Fire. I was speaking to someone about it last night at the club
in Aberdeen, they recommended it. I’ve seen the video on MTV and it’s pretty awesome..
What was the last movie you saw? Closer on our tour bus. Jude
Law is annoying and the film isn’t very good. Having said that, I liked Clive
Owen in it. There’s one really good bit where he tells someone to fuck off and
die, and it’s good, it’s quite funny.
What are you most looking forward
to? Going to Amsterdam on my birthday. We’re playing The London Calling
Festival.
What do you hate right now? Mushrooms…..still mushrooms.
What was the last thing you liked that you saw on TV? Can’t remember
the last time I watched TV. Probably something on MTV2. I liked the Clor Video.
Where or how do you feel most comfortable? Has to be in bed…beats
the floor.
What would you class as your most defining moment?
No 12 in mid week charts (for ‘Munich’)…that was pretty amazing.
The single
'Blood' will be releasedJ uly 11th 2005. Relevant Sites: http://www.editorsofficial.com/
