News 2010/Turin Brakes ~ 'Outbursts' and North American & European Tour Dates

Turin Brakes - Outbursts

Quiet is STILL the new loud. Perennial folk-duo Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian put the brakes on major releases with scaled-back studio album for Cooking Vinyl. New album 'Outbursts' out now.

25/03/2010

Although they’ve never quite courted the notoriety of bands like the Sex Pistols, be as easy a lay as Lady Ga Ga or ever be quite as pissed as Pete Doherty, Turin Brakes have earned themselves a quiet and consistent reputation for offering calm and relentlessly gentle records as inoffensive as a pair of carpet slippers, as uplifting as clouds and as dreamy as a cat-nap with an astral traveller. Their 2001 debut, ‘The Optimist LP’ was short-listed for Mercury Music Prize, they had a memorable Top 5 hit, they’ve written for Dido and Take That, and now they have a brand new album out on Cooking Vinyl.

The album, ‘Outbursts’ was released on March 1st features a characteristically warm and low-key selection of tunes, vulnerable, haunting and twinkling with duelling acoustic riffs, melting harmonies and enough sadness to dampen even the liveliest of spirits. It’s also rather sparse, a return to the sincerity and honesty of the pair’s earlier efforts with songs as pure and isolated as ‘Sea Change’ and ‘Mirror’ and as carefree and fanciful as ‘The Invitation’.

“We thought, let’s go back and do this whole thing like we used to. Do it as a duo. That’s where the magic is. The fewer middlemen there are between us and the people who are interested in our music, the better. I think our fans found it frustrating when they could see that we were having to play some sort of game when we were signed to a major label. We’re embarking on a whole new era where there is far greater immediacy between the band and the listener”.

'Outbursts' is the band's first studio album since 2007's 'Dark on Fire'. If you get your kicks from the likes of Mumford & Sons or Fleet Foxes then check it out.

The band follow-up a success UK tour with a series of dates in Europe and the US:
