What was by all accounts a chance meeting through a
sound engineering college in London and a meat factory
in Red Hill has thrown up the latest in eerie, furrowed-brow
indie music.
Paring down the tight-as-your-ass Ian Caple production
that kind of diluted fellow angst-rockers, JJ72's
first release, Mondo and co-producer, Tom
Savage stir to the boil a raw, menacing hotpot of
churning distortion and beautiful suicide melodies.
With influences ranging everywhere from Sonic Youth
to Galxie 500, there's none so more evident than
their passing familiarity with Radiohead. Courtesy
of Nick Dixon's pedantic and over-wrought fingers, and
Lloyd's jazzy, percussive doodlings, Mondo's first full
length release, 'THIS IS THIS' throws up all the delerious,
clumsy charm of Pablo Honey, all the brooding,
dark intent of, The Bends and all the weigthy
muso algorithms of OK Computer (compare and contrast,
'On Leaving' against 'Paranoid Android', if you don't
believe us).
Not that this undermines the credibility of the band
in the least. What with Muse terrifically over-stating
the grand theatrics of prog-radio rock and Travis dishing
out the sweetness and light, Mondo offer a tense, beat-up
spectre of old Thom Thumb and his Oxford friends at
their guitar hero zenith: frantic highs and lofty lows.
Let it soar and let it fester - pure open heart surgery
rock.
Mondo release 'I Am U' - the lead track on their debut
