BECK/ SEA CHANGE LISTENING PARTY

BECK - SEA CHANGE

Post-Modernism. Eclecticism. Acid folk explosion. Androgenous funky cowboy. The Flaming Lips. Lo-fi schitzball. Mellow dreamer. With expressions like these being sprinkled around like angel dust, I think it would be fair to say that Beck has a new album out. Read the story, launch the player.

16/09/2002

Mr Beck Hanson. Shady-cool vagabond cat of rock. Slinking in through a genre’s side door unnoticed with 3-day-stubble and matted hair, clicking his fingers just so they know he’s there, slipping some of the internal décor into his swag bag and strolling out the front door, probably en route to some shifty bar downtown. Master of ceremony, master of most of what he does. Utter star. Prince for the modern age. And, so far, over the years disappointments are few and far between, not really worth bothering with. From the grunge-transcending, stoner, low-mileage student-rock of ‘Mellow Gold’, to the updated rough-edged eclecticism of ‘Odelay’, the fuzzy desert acoustica of ‘Mutations’ and the funk and soul waterbomb of colour that was ‘Midnite Vultures’, there’s always been more than enough of Beck’s energy going spare to top up your mojo.

But what and where now? ‘Sea Change’ is released on Monday September 24th in the UK. The clues we have so far is that Radiohead producer Nigel Goodrich was at the controls and that it was recorded over the last year in LA. The press release talks of a departure from the party funk of ‘Midnite Vultures’ and of a “mellow, at times folky, heart-break of a record”, which points us back towards ‘Mutations’, but we’ll see. And shall you. As over the next week this exclusive listening booth will give you the chance to sample the record in its entirely. Bit by bit. Refer to the timetable below for the tracks you can hear per day and then click on the link to launch the player.

September 16 – The Golden Age / Paper Tiger
September 17 – Guess I’m Doing Fine / Lonesome Tears
September 18 – Lost Cause / End Of The Day
September 19 – It’s All In Your Mind / Round The Bend
September 20 – Already Dead / Sunday Sun
September 21 – Little One
September 22 – Side Of The Road
September 23 – The whole damn album
P.S. And in possibly some of the most exciting news we have heard in eons, Beck is to tour the US with the Flaming Lips not only as his support act (which is exciting enough a prospect anyway)… BUT as his backing band too. *Faints*.
